“Overfed and Out of Control: Why Trump’s Federal Cuts Make Sense”

By The Craig Bushon Show Media Team

If you’ve seen the headlines lately “Mass firings in Washington!” or “Trump guts the government!”you’re probably wondering: What’s really going on? Why would any president want to fire thousands of federal workers? Isn’t that dangerous?

It’s a fair question. But the answer isn’t about chaos. It’s about correction.

Let’s start with some facts. Under President Trump’s direction and with the green light from the U.S. Supreme Court, the federal government is undergoing a massive shake up. Tens of thousands of employees, mostly those in probationary status (meaning they are still in their trial period), are being let go across departments like the IRS, CDC, NIH, EPA, USDA, and more.

This isn’t a random purge. It’s the result of years, even decades, of something quietly breaking inside our government: an unaccountable bureaucracy.

Here’s what that means, plain and simple:

Most Americans go to work knowing they are accountable to a boss, to customers, to the bottom line. If they don’t perform, they can be fired. But in the federal government, once someone is in, they are almost untouchable. Layers of union protections and outdated civil service rules have made it nearly impossible to fire even the most ineffective or insubordinate workers.

And over time, the system has bloated. Washington now employs over 2 million civilian federal workers. That’s more than the population of 14 U.S. states. Many of these jobs are important, but far too many serve internal processes, endless paperwork, or politically driven programs that the public never voted for and cannot easily stop.

That’s why this matters.

President Trump isn’t just cutting jobs. He’s sending a message: the government exists to serve the people, not itself.

And that includes holding government employees to the same standards the rest of us face every day: show results, follow direction, and be accountable to the voters, not just your department.

Critics are calling it dangerous. But isn’t it dangerous to have no check on agencies that create rules with the force of law, even though we never elected them?

For example:

  • The IRS recently received funding to hire 87,000 new agents under the Biden administration, many of them to audit middle income families and small businesses.

  • The CDC and NIH became lightning rods during COVID, not because they tried to help, but because they made sweeping mandates without oversight, often contradicting themselves while silencing dissent.

  • The EPA issues regulations that cost farmers, energy producers, and everyday consumers billions, sometimes without congressional approval.

These aren’t hypotheticals. They are realities. And the people making these decisions often stay in place no matter who wins an election.

That’s not democracy. That’s a bureaucratic aristocracy.

Now, skeptics might ask: Won’t this hurt services like veteran care or disaster response?

Fair concern. But again, these layoffs are being done surgically. They target employees who are still in probationary status and have not yet earned full placement. Many agencies have offered early retirement or voluntary buyouts to reduce disruption. And importantly, this is just the first step in a longer reform, one that aims to rebuild a leaner, more responsive government, not destroy it.

In truth, this isn’t about firing people for the sake of it.

It’s about resetting the balance of power between the elected and the unelected. Between the people and the permanent state.

And it’s long overdue.

Skeptics don’t have to agree with Trump on everything. But they should ask themselves: Do I want a government I can hold accountable? Or one that holds power no matter who I vote for?

Because at the end of the day, this isn’t just a Trump issue. It’s a constitutional issue.

The truth is not hate speech.
It’s what keeps our Republic alive.
